Community and Culture Soar at 27th Annual Asian Kite Festival
EUGENE/OREGON — Colorful kites will take to the skies at the 27th Asian Kite Festival at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20 at Roosevelt Middle School, located at 680 E. 24th Avenue in Eugene. The free event is organized by the Eugene/Springfield Asian Council.
Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy will deliver opening remarks at the Kite Festival. Beginners and pros are welcome to show off their kite-flying skills. An all-ages kite competition will award prizes to participants in several categories, including Most Creative and Highest-Flying. Judges for the contest will include KMTR news anchor Ryan Cummings and 2012 Eugene Slug Queen Holly GoSlugly.
Featured performers will include the Chinese American Benevolent Association (CABA) Lion Dancers, Iron Mango Orchestra, UO Ahiru Daiko, Shinwa Taiko and the Eugene Chinese School Dance Troupe. For those who arrive empty-handed, the Asian Council will offer a kite-making class for $3, which includes supplies. Kites from various Asian cultures will also be on exhibit.
The event is co-sponsored by the Eugene Kiwanis Club, Asian American Foundation of Oregon(AAFO), and the Asian Pacific Island Student Union (APISU) of Lane Community College. The Philippine American Association (PAA) will provide light snacks and refreshments for sale.
The mission of the Eugene/Springfield Asian Council is to create opportunities that foster friendship and harmonious relations among all people by presenting events and activities that will stimulate a better understanding of Asian and Asian-American cultures.
